Mid-Week Video: Just Loot It

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

I’ll be the first to admit that I hate rap, and I think that a rap inspired warcraft video would be doomed to failure. However, I think this one came out surprisingly well. I only cringed maybe once or twice through the whole thing. Overall I think it was pretty funny, and being a big fan of ZA I can appreciate the use of the bosses throughout.

Enjoy!

Making Gold With Unusual Items

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Cleft

For me, it’s always been an enjoyable aspect of the game to pay some attention to the game’s economy and how I can profit on it in a short amount of time. One of my favorite past times is finding items that most people don’t think to sell. Here’s a few that have been good in the past:

1. Sanguine Hibiscus With the recent addition of the spore bat pet to sporregar reputation, these things have been selling like hotcakes. If you’re fairly well geared you can get them yourself in regular underbog, but I prefer to run heroics and just take turns on the flowers that litter the instance. Badges and money? Sign me up!

2. Clefthoof leather If you happen to have a skinner, head over to Nagrand and hunt yourself some clefthoof. These big fatties are easy to bring down at 70, and sell very well on the auction house.

3. Primal Life If you happen to be an herbalist, the large trees that stomp around Skettis make for easy primals, and therfore easy gold. Try not to do it around prime server times though, others have caught on to the trend…

More to come later on, I’ll keep you posted!

Buying Gold and Powerlevelling: Collateral Damage

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Don't Buy Gold!

When it comes to buying gold in exchange for real currency, or paying a service to level your character, one doesn’t often take into consideration the negative impact these actions have on their server of origin or the game in general. I don’t really understand it myself, but it seems that some players have more money than they do time, and so buy their way into characters/in-game currency. Blizzard recently made an official statement address this issue, which you can find here.

I thought it important to mention simply because I have had guildmates stripped of their belongings, and this would be much less prevalent if the market for currency were not so large. Obviously you can make your own moral choice as to whether you are comfortable buying in-game currency or not, but it’s something to keep in mind!

The Ultimate Arena

Arena

Well, it seems Blizzard was in fact serious when they said they would turn Arenas into an E-sport. Now you too can participate in this groundbreaking opportunity while competing with some of the best players around the world.

Here’s how it’s going to work, according to blizzard’s site (which you can find here):

* The registration fee is $20 per account for each six-week online qualifying round (played out on the tournament realm)
* Qualify for live tournaments with a chance to win cash prizes
* Instantly create up to three new level 70s with full sets of PvP gear
* Prove your skills in 3v3 Arena team combat

I definitely like the fact that everyone has the opportunity to compete at the same level. After all, given my relatively light playstyle, there’s no way I’d be able to compete with players that outgeared me, and I certainly wouldn’t pay for the experience! Int his case though, I may throw together a team, put my 20$ to work, and hope for the best.

These pots aren’t small either, the top team will bring home some serious bacon! Here’s the breakdown:

“At the world finals of the 2008 World of Warcraft Arena Tournament, the winning team will take home the impressive sum of $75,000. The second-place team will win $30,000, and the third-place team will be awarded $15,000. There will be cash prizes at each regional final as well, consisting of $15,000, $6,000, $3,000, and $1,500 for first, second, third, and fourth place respectively, while fifth- through eighth-place teams will each receive $600.”

Blizzard Says No to “Classic” Servers

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

RAWR

I’m not entirely sure why, but a good number of players seem to want a “vanilla” Warcraft server. By this of course I mean no expansion, capped at 60, no 51 point talents, etc. etc. I’m not sure if this is driven by nostalgia (let’s face it, you can’t really emulate the first time you login to WoW everytime), or the disdain for recent developments (namely arenas). Whatever the reason, it appears that Blizzard put the idea under consideration, but decided against implementing it:

“We were at one time internally discussing the possibility fairly seriously, but the long term interest in continued play on them couldn’t justify the extremely large amount of development and support resources it would take to implement and maintain them. We’d effectively be developing and supporting two different games.”

So there you have it. Apparently the resources needed to establish a classic server would be too much of a hassle for Blizzard to implement. Personally I wouldn’t be interested anyway, but hey, that’s just me.

Mid Week Video!: Tales of the Past 3 Trailer

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

So after watching Inside World of Warcraft last week, the mentioning of a warcraft movie named Tales of the Past 3 really piqued my interest. The last “good” wow movie I saw was The Return, and that was only a few minutes long. An hour and a half movie made entirely from the game? I wasn’t sure if it was going to be terrible or great.

I’ll be posting soon enough with my own review of the movie. If you’d like to see it for yourself, you can head to wow wiki for information and downloads!

Mid Week Video!: Inside World Of Warcraft

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

This week we have an interesting review of the current state of the game as we know it, class by class. It examines the class forums and summarizes the complaints that each class has and what improvements they would to see happen. While I’m sure some reviews are more biased than others, they spread plenty of humor around all the class issues and do harp on a couple of glaring things that need to be fixed.

It also mentions a wow movie that was recently released and has gotten rave reviews since. I may have to look into that…

Important Upcoming Change for Drinking

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

WATER!

Drinking and eating food to get back health and mana has been an integral part of the game ever since it was first developed. Blizzard has recently announced a change in the mechanic, however, that is of concern to many of us who drink water on a regular basis:

“This is an intentional change to how drinking works. The amount of mana regenerated now ramps up, so you will see little or no mana regen the first few seconds and then it will increase as the duration continues.

It appears this change did not make it into these patch notes, I’ll see about getting it added to future notes.”

What this means for you is that you’ll need to sit for longer to get your mana back, resulting (in theory) in a longer downtime. Presumably this was done to combat casters (druids) drinking within the arena running away and drinking once out of combat to gain a precious few moments of mana regen.

The implications of this for the PvE side of things is definitely something to keep an eye on. personally, I think a better solution would have this change only apply to the arenas themselves (if of course that’s the primary reason for the change). This would allow casters and others to gain their mana back as usual.

After all, who would ever ask for more downtime?

Thoughts on the Death of Prominent Warcraft Characters

Kael

With a game so prominent and so popular as Blizzard’s Warcraft series has been, one comes to a crossroads in terms of lore. On one hand, if you’ve played the Real Time Strategy games that precluded World of Warcraft, you likely enjoyed the storyline and would like to see it progress.

On the other you hand you may not like the direction that Warcraft’s developers are taking the story of the game. There was a lot of rumbling and grumbling when Dranei and Blood Elves were introduced in the expansion and the background leading up to their release. Characters once hard-lined to the story of the game are now being killed off, and many players are upset by that.

The problem of course is that in an MMO, things aren’t exactly concrete. Even if you kill Illidan, he’ll still be there waiting for you next week. I’ve liberated gnomeregan more times than I can count, but the place is still overrun with leper gnomes that I killed just yesterday.

In the end players can help to guide the storyline but don’t have much choice in it’s ultimate direction. As the story evolves, characters that used to play such an important role will be diminished or killed (Illidan, Kael’thas, Zul’jin… come next expansion..Arthas maybe?). We’ll just have to wait and see what Blizzard has in store for us next.

New Creature Revealed for Next Expansion

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

LOL

Information for the upcoming expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, has been scarce. However some news is trickling out and I’ve been scrambling to get updates as I can, perusing the forums for CM remarks or hints at upcoming features.

For now though, here’s the explanation for one of the game’s newest creatures: The Shovel Tusk

” The powerful and ferocious shovel tusks are easily identified by the massive curved antler which protrudes from their heads and the twin sloping tusks that extend from their jaw. The moose-like beasts use their tusks primarily to dig for food, whereas the antler makes for a fearsome ramming weapon in contests to establish dominance over other males.

The shovel tusks are territorial and will protect their feeding grounds with deadly force. Adventurers traveling in Northrend would be wise to avoid these cantankerous and unpredictable beasts.”

I’ll admit the antlers are bordering silly, but I’m sure there’s only so much you can work with before you start recycling animals or exaggerating various appendages (Notice that in Burning Crusade, many creatures have stupidly large teeth and horrible overbites?). We’ll have to see what Blizzard has in store for us next.

Mid-Week Video: 300

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

This week’s video is another Warcraft rendition of 300. I know, I did show a moonkin version, but I think this one warrants a post as well. While 300 relied on real movie footage to link it up to the warcraft world, this video uses nothing but in-game footage to recreate the images from the trailer. I think using the orc as the Persian ambassador was particularly appropriate, and the rest of the cinematic was put together beautifully.

Have any suggestions for future movies? Feel free to drop me a line!

Blizzard Achieves Victory Against Spammers

GOLD

If you’ve ever been trying to get to your mailbox in Ironforge/Undercity, only to have your way blocked by a level 1 dwarf/orc saying “Buy Gold! Best Gold ever! Come get your gold here!” then it’s likely you’ll be pleased to hear that Blizzard successfully had the practice stopped.

The whole article can be found here.

I’ve always found the practice of buying and selling virtual gold interesting. Some games have been purposely ingrained with a currency meant to be converted into $USD such as Second Life, while others like Warcraft have barriers set up to prevent converting your money into in-game currency. Regardless I think this is goign to be an on-going issue with any MMO game. Obviously it’s against the spirit of most MMOs to be able to buy your way to the best gear, accomplishments, etc. but it’s definitely not surprising that this occurs.

I suppose some people have more money than they do time.
