Thoughts on the Death of Prominent Warcraft Characters
With a game so prominent and so popular as Blizzard’s Warcraft series has been, one comes to a crossroads in terms of lore. On one hand, if you’ve played the Real Time Strategy games that precluded World of Warcraft, you likely enjoyed the storyline and would like to see it progress.
On the other you hand you may not like the direction that Warcraft’s developers are taking the story of the game. There was a lot of rumbling and grumbling when Dranei and Blood Elves were introduced in the expansion and the background leading up to their release. Characters once hard-lined to the story of the game are now being killed off, and many players are upset by that.
The problem of course is that in an MMO, things aren’t exactly concrete. Even if you kill Illidan, he’ll still be there waiting for you next week. I’ve liberated gnomeregan more times than I can count, but the place is still overrun with leper gnomes that I killed just yesterday.
In the end players can help to guide the storyline but don’t have much choice in it’s ultimate direction. As the story evolves, characters that used to play such an important role will be diminished or killed (Illidan, Kael’thas, Zul’jin… come next expansion..Arthas maybe?). We’ll just have to wait and see what Blizzard has in store for us next.
